Crabs are a serious business in Tacoma, and I don’t take them lightly. You can hit a waterfront spot on the Foss and watch the rain roll in while cracking king crab, or you can drive to a strip mall and get your hands covered in garlic butter.

I’ve eaten at all of them. The Fish Peddler set the bar with its king crab, and Crawfish Island’s butter sauce ruined other boils for me.

This list runs from date-night polished to full-on messy. Go get your shell on.

Service impeccable every visit

I hit Crawfish Island first. The butter sauce stands apart from every other boil in town. Rich, garlicky, and it clings to everything. The wings come out hot, crispy, and juicy, which is not a small trick. Boil bags and garlic noodles round out the order. Don't skip the noodles. Service has been impeccable every single visit. I have no complaints. That alone is rare. This is my baseline for Tacoma crab.

Asado is not my first stop for crab. But it earns a stop. The space is clean, and the service is great. Empanadas and bread are the real stars. I finished every plate in front of me, yes. The lamb and pasta satisfied. This place is not about crab, so I kept my expectations low. It delivered anyway. Worth a stop. Not first. If you want crab specifically, go elsewhere. If you want a good meal, this works.

GRANN is legit Southern comfort food. I ordered the crab and it did not disappoint. The catfish melts apart, so tender I almost lost it on the fork. Their whiskey cocktails are bold and balanced. The fusion stuff is creative without being silly. I had to wait for a reservation, but the wait was worth it. The service was sharp. I finished everything. If you want something different from the usual boil, this is the move. I am already planning the next visit.

Fish House Cafe surprised me. The catfish is seasoned with lemon, and it works. The fried fish tastes homemade, not like a frozen box. Everything is cooked to order, so it arrives hot. The sandwiches rank among the best I have had in Tacoma. Fast service too. I was in and out. This is a trip worth making. Not a fancy spot. Just honest food. I will be back, and I will bring people who think they know fried fish.
