Port Townsend has a way of making you drive past the ferry terminal three times before you admit you’re lost, but the eating is worth the loop. This town runs on fog, salt air, and the quiet stubbornness of people who refuse to move to Seattle.

We sent our stomachs everywhere from the golf course grill known for its perfect salmon to a takeout window slinging curry-spiced fried chicken that redefines the form. Sweet potato fries at the waterfront are fine, but we hunted down the real stuff.

Grab a muffin at the harbor, book a table for the garlic bread, and go find your next meal.

Curry spice fried chicken
Ethiopian Beef Shepard's Pie
Rotating creative guest vendors
Takeout windows with tent seating
Lunch and dinner specials

I showed up to Lila’s Kitchen expecting a quick lunch, and instead I got a lesson in how much personality one strip of takeout windows can hold. The curry spice fried chicken arrived with a crunch that made me forgive every dry wing I’ve ever endured, and the Ethiopian Beef Shepherd’s Pie is the kind of hybrid that should feel like a gimmick but instead tastes like a revelation. I sat in the tent seating, watched the rotating guest vendors do their thing, and felt that rare Portland-style energy that Port Townsend usually keeps under wraps. The specials change, but the soul does not. Bring patience, because the line is honest.

Spacious views of Puget Sound
Chairs made for short legs
Live music with wonderful acoustics
Goat cheese, honey, crackers

Vintage by Port Townsend Vineyards has a view that could make a grumpy person soften, though the chairs are clearly designed for someone with significantly shorter legs than mine. I spent a good ten minutes adjusting my posture like a folding chair contortionist while sipping wine and staring at Puget Sound, which honestly beats most forms of meditation. The live music fills the space with warm acoustics, and the goat cheese, honey, and crackers combo is the kind of simple snack that makes you wonder why you ever bother with elaborate charcuterie. It’s a place to linger, not to rush. Just mind your knees.

Port Townsend Brewing Company is the sort of place where you walk in a stranger and leave feeling like a regular, even if you’re only there for one pint. The staff are friendly enough to make you forget your own name, and the locals will happily talk your ear off about the weather or their dog. The beers are solid, nothing fancy, but they don’t need to be when the vibe is this relaxed. I even witnessed a proper Aussie shoey ritual, which is both horrifying and oddly endearing. The merchandise is affordable, so you can take home a hat without feeling robbed. Good times, low pressure.

Great value for a casual meal

PhoFilling Restaurant is proof that you don’t need fancy decor or a lengthy menu to win my heart. The spring rolls arrived packed with fresh herbs and that perfect snap of lettuce, and they disappeared faster than I care to admit. My noodle bowl came out generous enough that I had to unbutton my jeans, and the broth was hearty without being overwhelming. The service is friendly and welcoming, the kind that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into someone’s family kitchen. For the price, you get a meal that fills you up and leaves a glow. I left happy, full, and already planning my return.

Exceptional service and patio

Fresh, classic pad Thai
Warm sunny outdoor seating

Banana Leaf Thai Bistro has a patio that practically begs you to waste an afternoon, and I obliged. The avocado green curry is the star of the show, creamy and bright with just enough heat to wake you up without punishing you. The pad Thai is fresh and classic, no weird ketchup business, just clean flavors and a satisfying chew. The service is exceptional, attentive and warm, even as the patio filled up with sun-hungry locals. I sat there, fork in hand, and felt that rare contentment of a meal that simply works. Bring sunglasses and an empty stomach.

Friendly, patient staff
Great Magic card selection
Competitive pricing on boxes

I did not expect to spend two hours in Strange Days Comics and Games, but here we are. The staff are patient and friendly, willing to explain the difference between a Commander deck and a draft box without a single eye roll. The Magic card selection is impressive, and I found a few gems I’d been hunting for months. Their prices on boxes are competitive enough that I briefly considered skipping lunch to buy another. The store has that wonderful cluttered energy that makes you want to dig through everything. It’s not a restaurant, sure, but it’s the best kind of detour after a meal. My wallet regrets it, but I don’t.

Unique picnic menu with wines
Friendly servers offering extra samples
Fun bocce courts in sun
Impressive wines worth the price

Port Townsend Vineyards is the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve escaped the usual tasting room stuffiness. The indoor and outdoor spaces are gorgeous, with plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the sunshine. The picnic menu is a clever idea, and the wines are impressive enough that I didn’t mind the price. The servers are friendly and generous with samples, which means I left with a much clearer understanding of their portfolio and a slightly unsteady gait. There are bocce courts in the sun, which is dangerous because I lose every game but still have a great time. Worth a stop, even if you have to walk home.

Date-night perfection with slow food
Superb green bean appetizer
Best grilled salmon ever
Chef Jordan’s flavor infusion
Casual class at the golf course

Coyote & Crow Restaurant delivered the best grilled salmon I’ve had in recent memory, and I’m not being dramatic. The fish was cooked with a smoky char on the outside and a buttery center that made me close my eyes. The green bean appetizer is superb, bright and snappy with a flavor that lingers. Chef Jordan knows how to layer seasonings without hiding the ingredients, and the whole meal felt like a slow, deliberate date-night ritual. The casual atmosphere at the golf course is a strange juxtaposition, but it works. We lingered over every plate, and the service matched the unhurried pace. Just go hungry.

Smoked meats, sampled generously
Great breakfast and lunch
A true harbor discovery

Marina Café is the kind of breakfast spot you find by accident and then guard like a secret. The muffins are worth waking up for, fragrant and crumbly, with that perfect dome on top. I also sampled some smoked meats that the staff offered up generously, and they were tender and smoky without being overly salty. The breakfast and lunch menus hit the right notes, nothing fancy, just solid harbor fuel. Sitting there, watching the boats bob in the marina, I felt like I’d discovered the true heart of the waterfront. The coffee is strong, the service is quick, and the vibe is unpretentious. A true find.

Cozy but packed, book ahead
Seafood Alfredo, Lemon Amore, risotto

Fountain Cafe is a cozy little spot that packs in more people than it has any right to, so book ahead or prepare to hover awkwardly by the door. The garlic bread is worth bragging about, buttery and pungent, and the roasted garlic stole the whole show; I could have eaten it by the spoonful. The seafood Alfredo is creamy and rich, and the Lemon Amore is a bright, zesty counterpoint, and the risotto is cooked with a patience that shows. The service handled the chaos with grace, somehow keeping everyone fed and smiling. I left with garlic on my breath and a full heart. Just bring your patience.

Finistère is the kind of restaurant where every dish arrives looking like it was composed by someone who genuinely cares. The sourdough bread with whipped butter is a simple opening that had me scraping the plate. The ricotta beignets are worth saving room for, light and pillowy with a sweet finish that didn’t feel heavy. The gnocchi were the softest I’ve had in recent memory, practically melting on the tongue. The service is friendly, knowledgeable, and joyful, which is rare in such a polished spot. I didn’t want it to end, and I’ll be back soon. It’s that simple.

Waterstreet Cafe has a waterfront patio that makes you forget you’re in a working town, and the gluten-free salmon bowl is a revelation. The staff are seasoned professionals who know how to handle a busy downtown crowd, and the bar is set high with friendly, efficient service. The ingredients are clearly high-quality, and it shows in every bite. I sat there, watching the ferries come in, and felt that rare sense of being exactly where I should be. Do not skip this place.
